Facilitator Profile

Glenys Knopp, Davis FacilitatorDyslexia was a word that wasn’t mentioned during my teacher training in the 1970’s. It still wasn’t mentioned during my special education training in the 1990’s. (Dyslexia was not recognised by the NZ Ministry of Education until April 2007!).

In the meantime I was doing my best to teach students who were capable, often articulate and intelligent, but who had a mental block when it came to reading, writing and/ or maths. The teaching methods in which I had been trained, including phonics and lots of repetition and drill, often didn’t work well with these students.

In 2004 I heard Ron Davis speak. When he explained the dyslexic thinking style I realized why my remedial teaching methods often weren’t hitting the mark.

I was licensed as a Davis Dyslexia Correction® Facilitator in May 2007. Since then I have worked with a variety of clients, both children and adults. It is very rewarding to see the growth in self esteem and confidence in their ability to learn that takes place during the programme.

The role of Facilitator is quite different to that of teacher: I provide opportunities for clients to ‘learn how they learn’. This is much deeper than simply giving remedial exercises to improve reading or spelling – the client discovers why they think the way they do and how to use that thinking style to their advantage.

After many years of trying to help with the symptoms of dyslexia I am now seeing the difference it makes when people deal with the cause. What a powerful feeling it is for people to be in control of their learning!
