Signs of Dyslexia in Young Children

  • Late learning to talk
  • Trouble pronouncing words
  • Can’t tell if words rhyme or not
  • Great curiosity
  • Trouble remembering or saying the right word – not a good talker
  • Problems learning the names and sounds of alphabet letters
  • May love listening to stories, but little interest in the written words
  • Family history of problems with reading and writing

Signs of Dyslexia in Older Children

  • ​Slow progress in learning to read, write and spell
  • Trouble ‘sounding out’ words
  • Trouble reading or spelling little words – said, does, was, from, etc.
  • Prefers comics and picture books
  • Has a great imagination, but can’t write ideas down
  • May confuse or reverse letters, numbers or words (eg. b/d, 6/9, of/for)
  • Enjoys making models and designing things
  • Family history of problems with reading and writing

  • Doesn’t read for pleasure
  • Worries about tests and exams
  • Takes a long time to finish homework, if it’s done at all
  • Avoids reading and writing
  • Good at practical problem solving
  • Lacks confidence
  • Has trouble following instructions and remembering things
  • May work really hard to keep up with school work, but still lags behind
  • Family history of problems with reading and writing

  • Focuses on the big picture, rather than details
  • Family history of problems with reading and writing
